TITLE: Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry: Life as a Target SPEAKER: Alan G Marshall - Florida State University ABSTRACT OVERVIEW: From the very first FT-ICR mass spectrum (of CH[sub]4[/sub][sup]+[/sup] in 1973) [1], it was clear that FT-ICR held the potential for ultrahigh-resolution broadband mass analysis. Early applications exploited what is now known as MS/MS to define ion-molecule reaction pathways, kinetics, equilibria, and energetics for gaseous analytes. However, the full analytical impact of the technique bloomed with the advent in the late 1980's of MALDI and (especially) electrospray ionization of solid and liquid samples, as well as more recent atmospheric pressure ionization techniques. As a result, for the past 20+ years, FT-ICR MS has stimulated major improvements in other high-end mass analyzers (notably, time-of-flight and orbitrap). In this tal! k, I shall review the reasons why FT-ICR MS remains the highest resolution and highest mass accuracy technique, along with recent advances and applications ranging from drug receptors to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (for which we have resolved and identified compounds with 72000 different elemental compositions).
